March 9, 1933 – January 12, 2014

Joe Stanley “Stan” Stephen, 80, of Bryan, Texas, went to be with his Lord on January 12, 2014. A time for family to receive friends will be from 5 -7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at Hillier Funeral Home 2301 E. 29th St., Bryan, TX. The services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 16, 2014, at First United Methodist Church, 506 East 28th Street in Bryan, Texas with Pastor Rick Sitton officiating. There will be a private graveside service following the funeral for the family.

Stan was born on March 9, 1933 to Joe and Bernice Stephen in Eastland, Texas. He graduated from Eastland High School and obtained a bachelor’s and a law degree from The University of Texas in Austin, Texas. He went on to join the Navy and worked in the Navy Judge Advocate General’s office. Following his military service, he worked for Tenneco, the banking industry, and in the law profession.

He was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Bryan, Texas frequently serving as an usher. Stan was also involved with the Bryan Rotary Club, the Salvation Army, and loved playing hand ball, hunting and fishing. He will be remembered as an exceptional father, grandfather, and caring mentor to his family as well as an avid Longhorn fan.

Stan is preceded in death by his parents; one son, Doug Stephen; and one nephew, Kleat Stephen.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 58 years, Jean; two sons, Brian and wife Lesli, and Brad and wife Jody; one daughter, Suzanne Riggs and husband Michael of Houston; six grandchildren, Brinson Stephen, Austin Stephen, Callie Stephen, Cade Stephen, Lacy Stephen, and Harlan Riggs; one brother, Rod Stephen and wife Rita of Canyon Lake, TX; and one nephew, Mitch Stephen.

In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to the Salvation Army, 2506 Cavitt Ave, Bryan, TX 77801
