President Trump's attacks harm our nation's best ideals

I am deeply grieved by President Donald Trump's racist comments about four members of the United States House of Representatives who are women of color. His comments are an attack on all people of color and an attack on our country's best ideals -- ideals that made us the envy of, and the model for, the entire world.

Americans of diverse religious faiths are called by God to love and serve others, to be merciful, and to speak truth to power. I implore all Americans, and especially those of faith, to condemn such hate speech, especially when it comes from the elected leader of our nation.

His racist comments are hurtful and negatively impact our nation's moral standing.

The failure of our senators, John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, and Rep. Bill Flores to condemn President Trump's divisive and racist speech sends a clear message as to their values.
