PALESTINE — Centerville ran 31 more plays and almost doubled Big Sandy’s time of possession, but the Tigers couldn’t overcome four turnovers and the Wildcats’ big-play offense.
The Big Sandy Wildcats built an 18-point halftime and held on for a 39-32 victory in Class 2A Division I bi-district action Friday at Palestine Westwood’s Panther Stadium.
Big Sandy (4-7) returned the opening kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown and added touchdown runs of 38 and 47 yards to take a 26-8 lead.
The Tigers (6-4) came storming back in the second half with a 1-yard touchdown run by Dillon Denman and a pair of touchdown runs by Paxton Hancock, the last with 2 minutes, 12 seconds left in the game. Each time Centerville added a two-point conversion run.
Hancock had 29 carries for 190 yards and Caidenn Boss had 20 carries for 85 yards. Brian Rutlege added 54 yards on five carries as Centerville had 347 yards rushing. Big Sandy rushed for 341 yards on 27 less carries than the Tigers. Big Sandy added touchdown runs of 10 and 47 yards in the second half.
