HOUSTON — Despite a late safety, Brenham hung on to beat Houston Heights 42-38 on Saturday in a nondistrict football game at Delmar Stadium.

According to the Brenham Banner-Press, Heights forced a safety with 3:47 left in the fourth quarter but turned the ball over on downs on its subsequent posession, allowing the Cubs (2-1) to run out the final 1:54.

Heights took a 36-34 lead on a 60-yard TD pass with just under nine minutes left, but Daylonn McCowan scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 14-yard run about a minute later, according to the Banner-Press.

The lead changed hands three times in the final minute of the first half, but quarterback Garrison Weiss hit Jackson Mueller for a 28-yard TD pass with about 10 seconds in the second quarter, and the Cubs took a 21-18 lead into halftime.

Heights grabbed momentum in the second half, taking a 30-21 lead, but a 1-yard TD by McCowan cut the deficit to two before an interception by Eric Hemphill set up a 9-yard TD run by McCowan to swing the lead back to the Cubs early in the fourth quarter.

Brenham begins District 13-5A Division II play at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Bastrop Cedar Creek.
