Tayler Gray is heading back to the college ranks.

Gray, the A&M Consolidated volleyball coach since June, resigned because she had been offered and accepted a position at the collegiate level, she confirmed Sunday. Gray said she was unable to disclose further details.

She said it was a difficult decision and that Consol campus athletic coordinator Lee Fedora and College Station ISD assistant athletic director Sue Betts were “very professional.” A job listing for head volleyball coach had not yet been posted to the College Station ISD website as of Sunday evening. Fedora said he plans to meet with district athletic directors and Consol principals Monday morning to determine a course of action.

“They’ve been very kind throughout this whole process,” Gray said. “I just spoke with the girls today at 3, and they were very emotional. We were all emotional. But they were very kind, and they said they would miss me, and I’d miss them. But they’re very good kids.”

The Lady Tigers are coming off a 5-2 performance at the Nike Katy/Cy-Fair Varsity Tournament and are 6-2 on the year. Senior libero Maddie McKinney was named all-tournament at the event.

Before coming to Consol, Gray had been an assistant volleyball coach at UT-Arlington since February. Before that, she was a standout volleyball and softball player at Sam Houston State University, where she later served as an assistant volleyball coach under her mother, longtime Bearkat head coach Brenda Gray, for five years.

Gray replaced Jennifer Kazmierski, who retired from coaching after six seasons to spend more time with her children.

The Lady Tigers return to action at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Houston St. Agnes.
