MILANO — Grapeland’s versatile BJ Lamb was a one-man wrecking crew as he led the Sandies to a 44-9 victory over the Milano Eagles in a high school football opener on Friday night.

Lamb completed 10 of 14 passes for 250 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown to Cadarian Wiley that made it 20-6. Lamb reeled off 81 yards rushing on six carries, opening the scoring with a 48-yard touchdown only 23 seconds into the game. He ended the scoring with a 10-yard run with 10:05 left in the game.

The quarterback/wide receiver/free safety also returned a fumble 20 yards for a touchdown.

Milano’s scores came on a 26-yard touchdown catch by Drew Demeritt from fellow junior Noah Benavides. Junior Marcos Ruelas added a 20-yard field goal, the first of his career. Benavides rushed for 126 yards on 18 carries.

Grapeland, which is ranked fifth in Class 2A Division II by Texas Football, got a pair of rushing touchdowns by Wiley.

The Eagles, out of 13-2A Division I, will play at Burton next week.
